Young artists Competition on the occasion of World Habitat Day

On the occasion of World Habitat Day and as a side event of the“International Conference on Architecture, Settlement and Urban Identity in the Persian Gulf Region”,UN-Habitat in Iran in collaboration with Westminster university and Arte Sara Art & Architecture group will be holding “the Young artists Competition on Architecture, Settlement and Urban Identity in the Persian Gulf Region”. The exhibition is planning to display the artistic ability of the young artists in the fields of painting & photography.
“Identity and City”, “Architecture and Settlement”, “Climate” and “Human Kind” will be the main focus of this exhibition.
This exhibition is allocated to holding a thematic competition amongst the young artists around the world and The program aims to establish positive contribution between the youth and Human habitat programs in order to provide the young artists with an international context to represent their potential artistic sense as well as representing the contemporary artist attitude toward the theme of the conference

The competition will be held in two sections:
A- Painting (Regarding contemporary approach, using Various mediums)
B- Photography (Proximate photography, Directive photography, Media combination ,Designed Photography, photo based installation)

Prizes:
The First Prize winner in each section of the competition will receive a cash award of 3,000 USD, a plaque of recognition and an emblem from UN-Habitat presented by UN-Habitat, as well as a statuette. The selected entry will be printed in the exhibition book and also presented in the form of postcards and CDs.
The Second Prize winner in each section will receive a cash award of 1,500 USD, a plaque of recognition and an emblem from UN-Habitat presented by UN-Habitat, as well as a statuette. The selected entry will be printed in the exhibition book and presented in the form of postcards and CDs.
The Third Prize winner in each section will receive a cash award of 1,000 USD, a plaque of recognition and an emblem from UN-Habitat presented by UN-Habitat, as well as a statuette. The selected entry will be printed in the exhibition book and presented in the form of postcards and CDs.
4th to 10th place winners, commendable entries in each section of the competition, will receive a plaque of recognition presented by UN-Habitat, an emblem of UN-Habitat, and their work printed in the exhibition book and presented in the form of postcards and CDs.
11th to 30th place winners in each section of the competition will receive a certificate signed by the UN-Habitat’s regional director, and their work will also be printed in the exhibition book and presented in the form of postcards and CDs
Deadline for entries:
The entries in JPG format and registration form should be forwarded to artcompetition@humanhabitation.org before the end of office hours on 19 Aug 2009.

Exhibition of museum replicas in London
On the occasion of World habitat day – October 2009

In line with the objectives of the International Conference on Architecture, Settlement and Urban Identity in the Persian Gulf Region, the Exhibition of museum replicas plans to showcase artifacts dating back to various periods of the history of the area.
Scale model replicas of the artifacts discovered in the Persian Gulf region along with related information are to be displayed at the exhibition.
Also, a more diverse collection of the artifacts some replicas of which are showcased at the Small Museum Exhibition will be displayed in a digital museum that combines the virtual museum and the real museum together.
Classification of the Models to be demonstrated :
-Inscriptions and bas-reliefs
-Statuettes and sphinxes
-Utensils, cups, rhytons and the like
-Coins
-Historic maps
Objectives:
Visitors will have the opportunity to become closely familiar with the history of the art, architecture and cultural identity of the human settlements and ancient civilizations of the Persian Gulf region.
Encouraging the support for the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN Habitat) by the visitors of the exhibition and participants of the conference –through the purchase of the relics and multimedia products that will be offered at the exhibition.
Place and Date:
The exhibition will be held at the Exhibition Hall of the University of Westminster from 5-11 Oct. 2009. Also, some of the models will be on display in a small space at the entrance of the British Museum publicizing the exhibition.

Sources Used in Producing the Models:
Information gathered from reliable sources including top famous museums of the world (the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum, the Louvre Museum, the State Hermitage Museum, the National Museum of Iran and etc.) private collections, libraries, researchers and scholars in the field.
The Scale of the Models:
The scale used in building each models is determined by the size and situation of the exhibition venue and the main objectives of the event that is to say to provide the visitors with related information in the best way possible.
Required information about the relationship between the size of each model and the actual size of the object it represents will be available for each one of the models on display.
The Time Period and Geographic Location:
The third millennium B.C. until the Islamic era is the time period of choice.
The relics belong to the historic civilization in the northern parts of the Persian Gulf namely, the Iranian provinces of Khuzestan, Hormuzgan and Sistan, central Iran, the Persian Gulf littoral states as well as the Mesopotamian civilization (existed in the south of where is currently called Iraq). Also, in line with the objectives of the exhibition, attention has been paid to the civilizations that were not themselves situated in the area but influenced the region’s civilizations.
Techniques Used in Producing the Models:
Models presented at the exhibition are divided into two sections:

Hand-made models:
• Hand-made production of the models is what makes them unique. This method of production is aimed at reproducing an exact replica of the original object.
• Only one replica is made from the selected objects in this section. Related information including the scale used in the production of the model, the emblems of conference and the UN Habitat will be also offered for the selected models in this section.

Die-cast models:
• A limited number of the models are produced in this way; however, they are finished by hand which takes a level of artistry.
• Related information including the scale of the model, the numbers produced, the title of the conference and the emblem of the UN Habitat will accompany the model.
Digital Museum Exhibition:
Given the vast diversity of the artifacts discovered in the region and not being able to bring all of them to the exhibition, their images along with required information are shown in another section of the exhibition called the Digital Museum.
All the information presented in this section is offered for sale at the exhibition and at the British Museum gift shop in the form of a multimedia presentation.
Models for Sale:
Models presented at both sections of the exhibition (along with the emblem of the conference and the UN Habitat plaque) also, a CD containing a collection of all the offered objects shall be available for sale at the exhibition.
Also, the models that are built in limited numbers -along with the emblem of the conference and the UN Habitat plaque- as well as a CD containing a collection of all the offered objects shall be available for sale at the British Museum gift shop.
Proceeds from the sale of the products will be allocated to support the United Nations Habitat.
